AZIZ ELHIHI

Nato a Meknes (Marocco), vive e lavora in Svizzera dal 1981. Dopo Ginevra e Nyon, risiede attualmente nel Canton Ticino, a Morbio Inferiore. Ha realizzato numerose mostre in Svizzera: a Ginevra, Nyon, Lugano, Mendrisio (Museo d'Arte), Morbio Inferiore e Magliasco; all'estero: in Italia (a Milano e Bologna), in Marocco, Francia e Egitto. Ultimamente si è anche dedicato alle performances collaborando con altri artisti. Per capire la pittura di Aziz Elhihi forse occorre vederlo dipingere. Oppure occorre aver sperimentato la forza del vento del suo nativo Marocco, lungo la valle del Dra, per esempio, dove il vento modella le montagne, quasi scrivendo storie secolari sui versanti pietrosi. Ciò che fa impressione in Aziz è proprio questa forza e questa lunga che si porta dietro, difficilmente leggibile nella sua pittura, ma ben scolpita nel suo volto. Quando dipinge quasi si trasforma, recupera l'antica fierezza della sua civiltà d'origine, forza e fierezza per niente assopite dalla permanenza ultradecennale in Svizzera. Aziz è riuscito a riassumere in sé la forza e la fantasia africana e l'esperienza e la cultura europea. Ma con un timbro assai proprio, personale definitivo. Alla primitività e incisività del segno "africano", Aziz ha innestato la forza espressiva di Picasso, o l'ispirazione sognante di Chagall, o l'essenzialità delicata di Klee. Ma tutto questo ormai lo si può leggere solo in filigrana: è stato assimilato per istinto (Aziz si definisce "artista-pittore autodidatta"). Restano la forza e la dolcezza sue proprie. Franco Beltrametti aveva definito la pittura del berbero Aziz Elhihi "intensa, calda, déchirée, nobilmente anacronistica, volutamente infantile" e aveva scritto che Aziz è "felicemente inquieto". "Sono condannato all'arte, non ho scelta" ha dichiarato una volta Aziz. E' il destino, quasi la maledizione che si sentono addosso i veri artisti, che hanno il coraggio di scommettere tutto per l'arte e la bellezza che ricercano nel mondo, ricordando "tracce" di mondi lontani, ma ormai protesi sul futuro, a tentare di tracciare una forma d'arte nuova, innestata nella tradizione, capace di far dialogare mondi diversi, ma tutta giocata sull'invenzione dell'inespresso. Aziz è un artista del mondo nuovo che si apre dinanzi a noi, capace di superare vecchie frontiere, tese al recupero "salvifico" e vitale dell'arte.

Born in Meknes (Marocco) Aziz Elhihi has lived and worked in Switzerland since 1981. After living in Geneva and Nyon, he is currently based in Morbio Inferiore in the Ticino Canton. He has had several exhibitions in Switzerland (Geneva, Nyon, Lugano, Mendrisio (Museum of Art), Morbio Inferiore and Magliasco)and abroad in Italy in Italy (Milan and Bologna), Marocco, France and Egypt. Recently he has created performances involving other artists. To understand Aziz' painting you probably have to watch him paint. Or else you need to have experienced the strength of the wind sweeping along the Dra Valley in his native Marocco, where it shapes the mountains, seeming to write age-old stories on the rocky slopes. What is particularly striking in Aziz is precisely his strenght and the long story he carries with him, hardly decipherable in his painting, but distinctly sculpted in his face. When he paints he is virtually transfigured, recovering the ancient self-esteem of his native civilisation, an intensity and self-esteem which have not been weakened by a more than ten years residency in Switzerland. Aziz succeeds in combining African vigour and imagination with European experience and culture, and he does so by exploiting his own personal style: Onto the primitiveness and decisiveness of something characteristically "African", he manages to graft Picasso expressive power, Chagall's dreaming inspiration, or Klee's delicate essentiality. Yet this can be seen today as if behind a veil: Aziz has absorbed things instinctually (he calls himself a self-taught artist-painter). His own particular sweetness and vigour are all that remain. Franco Beltrametti defined the painting of Berber Aziz Elhili as "intense, hot dechiré, nobly anachronistic, deliberately childish", adding that Aziz is "happily restless". "I am condemned to paint, I have no choice", Aziz once said. This is destiny, virtually the curse that those true artists feel who are dauntless enough to bet everything on the art and beauty they seek in the world. They recall "traces" of distant worlds, but at the same time they are projected towards the future, in an attempt at forging a new art form, embedded in tradition and capable of making different worlds communicate, with everything dependent on the invention of the unexpressed. Aziz,an artist of the new world, has opened himself up to us, as he strides beyond old frontiers, bent on achieving the vital and "saving" recovery of art.
